FEATURED ARTIST: EMILIA CASTILLO

About

“I follow my hands. They are the best companions in my work. They allow me to express things I can’t put into words.”

Award-winning designer Emilia Castillo is heir to the silversmith legacy begun by her father, Antonio Castillo. Antonio trained under renowned silversmith William Spratling and, with Emilia's uncles, founded the famed “Los Castillo” workshop that contributed to the development of Taxco jewelry in the 40's and 50's.

Emilia Castillo’s work — porcelain with inlaid sterling silver and tableware that combines silverplate with alabaster, black onyx and malachite — takes simple forms from nature and transforms them into art. A sinuous malachite salamander is the handle on a silver pitcher; sterling silver tadpoles decorate porcelain plates with frogs balanced on the rim; scorpions and snakes rendered in stone crawl across serving pieces.

Though her works are owned by presidents and kings, Emilia Castillo continues to live and work on the Old Taxco ranch where she grew up. “As a child, my toys were insects, reptiles, frogs, plants, and rocks,” says Emilia. Her work continues to be inspired by nature and childhood. Even her most elegant and functional pieces surprise us with their playfulness.
